PRIZES worth more than RM150,000 were given away to winners of the "Celcom-Proton SMS Challenge Contest" at Mutiara Hotel Kuala Lumpur, recently.
The grand prize winner was Wong Yuk Chiong, a 31-year-old bank officer from Batu Niah, Sarawak. He drove away with a Proton Satria GTi worth RM74,000.
"I am using an old Datsun B10 with a 1968 registration, so I have been wanting to get a new car for a long time.
"I wanted to wait till 2005 where everybody thought the prices of cars would be cheaper but Celcom has given me a brand new car for free. This is the biggest ang pow I have ever received," said Wong.
Meanwhile, Hasnita Mohd Rosli from Petaling Jaya received a Proton Wira Aeroback worth RM44,000.
"I'm very happy. This is the first time I entered such a competition and I never expected that I would win a new car," said Hasnita, a 25-year-old business analyst.
The other winners, who received a Proton T-Blaze AL3 mountain bike worth RM4,750 each were Syed Ishak Syed Manan, Abdul Halim Abdullah, Long Tian Hong, Nurkhan Abd Rahman and Saripah Husol. Eight others received RM300 as weekly prize winners.
The SMS contest was open to Celcom's 019 and 013 users, where contestants registered by typing PROTON, and sending it to 26200 and answering several general questions and on Proton products.
The contest yielded a record breaking number of contestants, with nearly 150,000 people sending almost 10 million SMS messages.
The contest, which ran for a month and ended on Dec 31, 2003 was jointly organised by Celcom (Malaysia) Berhad and Proton-Edar Sdn Bhd.
Present at the prize presentation were head of customer acquisition and retention of Proton-Edar, Tan Ghee Cheow, its head of marketing communication, Yusri Yusuf and senior vice-president of Celcom, Zubir A. Rasid.
